The Lorax himself has no choice but to leave, literally hoisting himself up into the sky by the seat of his pants, never to return. The loss of the very last Truffula tree is a rather tragic moment. Was my big empty factory… the Lorax… and I. Now all that was left ‘neath the bad-smelling sky They jumped into my carsĪnd drove away under the smoke-smuggered stars. So, in time, my uncles and aunts, every one,Īll waved me goodbye.

The birds can no longer sing with all the smog in the air, and the fish are even getting up out of the water and leaving for newer pastures (or… well, lakes).Īs the Lorax tries to convince the Onceler yet again that he’s doing nothing but ruining the environment just to line his pockets with money, this happens:Īnd at that very moment, we heard a loud whack!įrom outside in the fields came a sickening smack The sky grows dark, and the smoke and waste material from the Onceler’s factories begin polluting the local area. The Onceler’s response is to invent a machine that chops down more trees in one swing, and invite his entire family to come work for him and expand the business. This is still justification enough for the Onceler to go chopping down the trees of the forest, and to continually ignore The Lorax, a guardian spirit of some sort who “speaks for the trees.” The Lorax tries to gently persuade the Onceler to perhaps cut down less trees. What is a Thneed? Why, it’s “a Fine-Something-That-All-People-Need!” Essentially, a fad product. This particular kind of tree is known for its incredibly soft and flexible tufts, and can be used to make “Thneeds”. When he was younger and much less wise, the Onceler arrived in a tranquil forest filled with Truffula trees. Way back in the days when the grass was still greenĪnd the pond was still wet and the clouds were still clean… The young boy is given the privilege of hearing the Onceler’s story, and from there, we go back to a starkly different landscape. A little boy from a heavily industrial world travels out to the middle of nowhere, where he comes across an incredibly tall house, where an old, faceless man named The Onceler lives in repentance. (It also has a broken spine, and teeth marks on some pages.)īefore we begin, let’s go for a brief synopsis of the plot. The copy I’ve just gotten from the library has only 20 pages. The book itself, being aimed for such a young audience, is incredibly short. (Believe me, it’s quite amusingly jarring to go from The Cat in the Hat to How The Grinch Stole Christmas to The Lorax to Halloween Night is Grinch Night and finally, The Grinch Grinches The Cat in the Hat.

HOW TO WATCH THE LORAX TV
Feel free to go and watch the TV cartoon before if you’ve never watched it - it’s only 25 minutes.
HOW TO WATCH THE LORAX MOVIE
I’m also relying on a YouTube stream of the original movie from 1972. I just got back from the library with a copy of the original book, and I have the DVD of the 2012 movie. But now, I’m back from the library, and ready to do my post on The Lorax! Various other things came up in life (including a respiratory infection that made me feel crappy for a whole week, and heartbreakingly prevented me from attending classes and going to London Comic Con).
